NEW TIMOR-LESTE GOVERNMENT IS APPOINTED

The Government of Timor-Leste, resulting from the 22 July elections, was partially sworn in today.

 

The 7th Timor-Leste constitutional Government will be led by Prime Minister Mari Alkatiri, leader of the Revolutionary Front for an Independent Timor-Leste (FRETILIN) – the most voted party in the elections - and who previously held the same position between 20 May 2002 and 26 June 2006.

 

Mari Alkatiri will also be the Minister of Development and Institutional Reform, and will be responsible for the Special Areas of Social Market Economy of Timor-Leste (Oecusse and Ataúro, and another four "Special Areas for the Development of the National Territory") and for Infrastructure.

 

The Prime Minister, Mari Alkatiri, will also temporarily be responsible for the Ministry of Justice.

 

The Government will have four Ministers of State, three of whom took office today: José Ramos-Horta (former President of the Republic), who will also be National Security Adviser; Rui Araújo (former Prime Minister), who will be the Minister of Health, and Estanislau da Silva, who will be Minister of Agriculture, and will also temporarily take up the position of Minister of Mineral Resources.

 

Adriano Nascimento, from the Democratic Party (PD), will be the Minister of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers.

 

Aurélio Guterres will take over the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, and the Ministry of State Administration will be led by Valentim Ximenes.

 

Rui Augusto Gomes will be the next Minister of Finance and Planning and José Somotxo will be the Minister of Defense.

 

Mr. Rui Araújo will also be temporarily responsible for the Ministry of Education, with Lurdes Bessa (PD) acting as Vice-Minister.

 

António da Conceição, the former Minister of Education, will be the new Minister of Commerce and Industry, and Florentina Martins Smith will lead the Ministry of Social Solidarity.
