COVID-19 Measures Announced

The Government has announced several containment measures against the spread of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) within its territory.

A decree has just been adopted to allow public health authorities to order the confinement at home or in a healthcare center of persons coming from countries where the epidemic has been officially declared, persons who have tested positive for COVID-19 or persons in contact with others who have tested positive. Refusal to comply with these orders is punishable as a criminal offense.

Gabon’s land borders have also been closed, and visas for tourists from all risk areas, including the European Union and the United States, have been suspended until further notice. Only one international flight per week and per airline will be allowed, and international travelers shall be subject to reinforced sanitary inspections at all ports of entry.

Schools, daycare centers, places of worship, bars and night clubs have also been closed. Gatherings of more than 30 people are forbidden until further notice, and all public events have been cancelled. Public transportation use has also been restricted to essential displacements only.

On March 16, the Ministry of Justice has also taken measures with respect to courts and court proceedings. All court hearings, with the exception of urgent civil proceedings, have been suspended until March 30.

The President of Gabon has strongly recommended behavioral and social measures, such as avoiding handshakes or hugs and regular handwashing.

A special hotline (1410) has been established to alert the health authorities of suspected cases.
